Through Hockey Canada, Hockey Northwestern Ontario is able to provide programs and information programs for players and coaches pertaining to development.

Player Development

The goals, philosophy and objectives of the program are:

  • "Learn to Play" program for beginning hockey players aged 4 to 8.
  • Teaching basic hockey skills so players can enjoy the game.
  • Assisting in development, refining and enhancement of basic motor patterns.
  • Developing and encouraging the concept of team play, through player participation in -
  • On and off ice activities.
  • To implement fitness, fair play and cooperation aspects within the fun of the game.

A motion was passed that in the 2002 - 2003 hockey season the "Initiation Program 1", which consists of 4, 5 and 6 year olds, will adhere strictly to the Initiation Program curriculum and the participants may only participate in Jamborees AND that effective the 2002-2003 hockey season the "Initiation Program 2", which consists of 7 and 8 year olds, will adhere to the Initiation Program curriculum until December 1st of the hockey season and after this date participants may engage in league play and tournaments.

Each attendee will receive the Initiation Program Manual and upon completion, Certificate of Completion and a Shoulder Patch.

Evaluation Requirements

Attendance and participation in the revised initiation program (approximately 4 - 5 hours).
